What is Answer Engine Optimization?

AEO is optimizing content to be selected as the direct answer by any answer-first surface — voice assistants, featured snippets, and AI chat assistants — and is largely used interchangeably with GEO today.

Answer Engine Optimization predates the current generative AI wave. It grew out of the era of Google featured snippets and voice assistants (Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant) reading out a single answer instead of showing a results page. The goal was always the same: structure content so a machine can lift out one clean, correct answer without a human having to click through and read the whole page.

When large language models became the dominant answer surface, AEO and GEO converged. Most practitioners now use the terms interchangeably, though some draw a line: AEO is about winning the single "position zero" answer slot (a featured snippet, a voice response), while GEO is the broader practice of being included, cited, or recommended anywhere inside a generated response, which might be a full paragraph naming several brands rather than one extracted fact.

In practice, the tactics overlap almost completely: a concise, question-led answer near the top of the page (ideally 40-60 words), FAQ and HowTo schema, clear headers that mirror how people actually phrase questions, and content that states a specific fact or recommendation rather than hedging. Whether you call the result an AEO win or a GEO win, the underlying work is the same.

Frequently asked questions

Mostly yes in current usage. AEO is the older term, rooted in featured snippets and voice search; GEO is the newer term for the same idea applied to generative AI answers. Most teams treat them as one discipline.
